Richmond, CA (June 24, 2021) – One driver was killed and another driver was apprehended on suspicion of driving under the influence after a two-vehicle collision occurred in Richmond early Thursday, June 24.

Officers with the Richmond Police Department responded to South 37th Street and Carlson Boulevard around 2:30 a.m. Upon arrival, they discovered two badly damaged vehicles at the scene, an Audi SUV and an Acura sedan. The Acura's driver was trapped in his vehicle and had to be extricated. He was airlifted to a local trauma center but succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

The driver of the SUV sustained moderate injuries and exhibited signs of impairment on the scene. A passenger in his vehicle suffered major injuries, and both individuals were transported to the hospital via ambulance for treatment. Additional passengers in the Audi were treated by paramedics and released at the scene.

An initial investigation indicated that the Audi's driver was traveling northbound on Carlson when he struck the Acura as it entered the intersection from South 37th Street. The driver of the Audi was arrested and booked on felony charges after DUI was determined.

The identities of those involved weren’t immediately available, though officers asked that anyone with information contact RPD Traffic Investigator M. Pagaling.

The investigation is ongoing.

California Fatal Car Accidents

Per reports from California Department of Transportation officials, more than 30,000 traffic accidents resulted in fatalities, major injuries, or minor injuries on Bay Area roadways over the last several years. As a result, thousands of lives are lost every year on California's highways, particularly on major thoroughfares connecting large city centers like San Francisco and the rest of the Bay Area, local streets across the state, and beyond.

Unfortunately, car accidents causing injuries or even fatalities are a common part of life in California. When multiple victims are involved in an accident and sustain injuries, they may have to deal with other drivers' insurance companies, long-term physical pain, and expensive hospital bills. Occasionally, as a result of these incidents, victims succumb to their injuries, leaving their grieving families to cope with emotional trauma and financial difficulties as a result of another driver's negligence.

But the victims and their families affected by these wrecks can seek help from a Bay Area accident attorney. A skilled attorney in California can help victims seek justice and the fair compensation they deserve after suffering in an accident that occurred through no fault of their own.
