Oakland, CA - Man Hit & Killed in Pedestrian Accident at Foothill Blvd & Mitchell St

Oakland, CA (February 20, 2021) – A pedestrian died on Wednesday night after being hit by one vehicle and then hit again by another vehicle as he lay on the ground, per reports from the Oakland Police Department.

Officers say that the first driver who hit the 67-year-old man fled from the scene while the second driver pulled over and cooperated with authorities. The victim’s name has not been released by authorities at this time. The accident happened in the 2700 block of Foothill Boulevard near the intersection of Mitchell Street around 6:10 p.m. At that time, the man, who was walking with a cane and carrying a shopping bag, was struck by a silver car that kept going.

Oakland Police Sgt. Randy Pope said that the man had almost completely crossed the street when he was hit and was walking slowly enough for passing vehicles to stop in time.

Following the initial collision, the pedestrian was dragged by a 2013 Chevy Volt after being hit a second time. The driver of the second vehicle, identified only as a 34-year-old Oakland man, stopped and stayed at the scene.

Bystanders at the scene were able to pull the man from underneath the second vehicle but he was pronounced dead before he could be transported to an area medical center.

The accident remains under investigation, and police are still looking for the driver of the first vehicle involved in the crash.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family of the deceased victim.
